The Anchorage Assembly plans to release a proposal that will only allow cars to drive on sidewalks and open up streets for pedestrian travel only. The news comes as the city is reeling from a surge in pedestrian deaths over the summer and officials scramble to offer kneejerk solutions. As Fall turns to Winter, city leaders have said that they are worried about how the trend will continue as the roads get icy and drivers have less time to stop.

"This seems to be the most cost-effective action that we can take that will absolutely make everyone happy," said Assemblyman Daniel Volland who supports the measure.

"We must do better," urged former city planner Anna Brawley who has designed cities with roads for cars. "As a human that walks, I can offer a unique perspective on the manner," she continued.

"The absolute last thing that we should ever do is educate people on the dangers of jumping out in front of cars," said Assembly Vice Chair Meg Zaletel. "Imagine the implications!"

The city plans to hold "listening sessions" over the coming weeks and will post the dates and times on their website.
